Kia ora, I'm Te Hana Goodyer – a Māori creative exploring how whakapapa can be expressed through design.
Background
In my whānau, our whakapapa comes through a female line. Because of that, many of us carry different surnames, often Pākehā names. For example – I'm a Goodyer, my cousins are Aspinall, Adams, Hings and so on.
This makes it difficult to represent our shared identity as whānau.

I developed 3 distinct modular characters for my whānau
Proof of concept
For our whānau – W, H, T, represent the first letter of tūpuna names that associated with our whānau trusts looking after our whenua.
By also overlaying the whenua names onto these characters – and stacking them, we were able to express individuality and acknowledge shared connection – making use of type and symbology in a systematic format.
These glyphs form the foundation of a modular system and mark the beginning of a new typeface.
The kaupapa, Tātai
– A Whakapapa Glyph System
Design research project
Tātai is a design-led research project focused on creating a Te Ao Māori-inspired glyph-based type system. Using the familar Latin-script 26 character alphabet, but visually referencing natural Toi Māori forms.
— something that whānau can use as free, creative and accessible way to acknowledge their whakapapa, whenua, and connections.

Proposed deliverables
if successfully funded
Help fund this design research project
With your support
I’ll develop the glyph system, create wearable forms for whānau, and exhibit the work as a sculptural piece celebrating connection.
My target is $3000.
